Emperor Penguins have a complex scientific name. Aptenodytes means featherless diver. Penguins do have feathers of course, just not the large easily distinguished feathers of flying birds. Forsteri comes from naturalist J.R. Forster, who accompanied Captain James Cook on his sea voyage past Antarctica in the late 1700s. Although Cook and his crew didn’t land on Antarctica, Forster did spot and describe Emperor Penguins, giving him the honor of naming the species. Attempts to reach Antarctica continued, but the south pole would not be reached until 1911 by Roald Amundson. He’d made an earlier attempt at the continent in the late 1800s, but his ship became ice bound. To avoid starvation and scurvy, the men hunted penguins, who produce their own vitamin C.
